Excerpts from the individual sections of this document are vailable from the homepage of this site.
Many of us have repeatedly asserted that human sexuality is a poor proxy for the real division in the UMC. It is the pluralism that leaves us incapable of speaking with one mind or with any integrity on any matter. As a result, people needlessly suffer.
This document is an attempt to offer something of Christian integrity on a matter of import. Others are more capable. They just don’t work for the general church agencies that are charged with doing it.
Ridiculously long for a blog post and too pastoral for an academic work, it is posted as a Word.doc download. Here is a pull quote from the conclusion to give a sense of its content.
“We butter the toast as the TV news anchor reports that the state (that’s us) executed a serial killer by lethal injection last night, and we ask our children, “Do you have your homework ready?” A reporter notes the number of casualties in Afghanistan as we pour another cup of coffee. Across town a homeowner shot and killed an intruder, and we think, “I’m glad they got that one,” as we reach for the keys to the car. We drive past a clinic where some of the 600,000 people will die this year to “protect the life and health of the mother,” and we drop our children
off at school and say, “I hope you do well on the test today.” It is 8:00 A.M. and we have already failed our test for today. This is not the way things are supposed to be.”
It is long, but if you have the time it is better than some of the things that could occupy one’s mind. If you find it worth reading then I hope you will comment here with corrections, arguments, or encouragement for improvements.
I started reading, and read the first section…all I can say is….I am in eager anticipation for the next time I pick up this reading. You’re right in that we need to read it in blocks….not because of its length….but because of its content and message. One needs to soak it in a section at a time…Blessings to you, my Brother!
